What's behind the PLA's exercises around Taiwan?

On April 1, the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) launched joint military exercises around Taiwan Island without prior warning. Tactically, the move was indeed unannounced, but strategically, every exercise by the Eastern Theater Command serves as a warning.
As stated by the Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Wu Qian in early 2024, "the PLA will defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity with concrete actions." After Lai Qing-te's inauguration in May, Wu also warned that "every act of 'Taiwan independence' provocation will be met with escalating countermeasures."
However, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities remain obstinate. They miscalculate the situation, believing that the Chinese mainland will not respond unpredictably to their collusion with external forces to seek independence. They delude themselves into thinking that they will receive unconditional support from countries including the U.S. and that the public in Taiwan will remain blinded by their "anti-China" political manipulation.
Yet, the Chinese government, people and the PLA have already shattered these illusions through resolute and forceful actions, ensuring that every provocation by the DPP authorities and its ilk backfires.
Regarding the PLA's exercises and countermeasures in the Taiwan Straits, the DPP authorities, led by Lai Ching-te, have consistently misled the public, claiming that the drills are just temporary shows of force and that Taiwan can rely on U.S. support.
In reality, since Tsai Ing-wen took office in 2016–and even in the short time since Lai's inauguration–the Chinese mainland has systematically compressed the space for "Taiwan independence" through measures including circumnavigation patrols, combat readiness drills, the Joint Sword series of exercises, mid-March drills and the current military exercises around Taiwan. A series of targeted punitive actions against specific actors have effectively deterred and struck "Taiwan independence" forces and external interferers.

Compared to past actions, the Eastern Theater Command's current joint military exercises have distinctive features:
No prior warning: Taiwan's defense authorities had reported "normal" daily military activity in recent days, even claiming "no PLA aircraft near Taiwan" on March 30 and 31, with only naval vessels detected.
Joint blockade and control: Footage released by the Eastern Theater Command reveals that Taiwan's political, military and economic hubs were included in the blockade simulation, achieving partial real-world containment.
Closer proximity: The exercise emphasized "multi-directional, low-altitude approaches." How close are PLA warships and aircraft approaching? To what extent? Will Taiwan's authorities dare to disclose the details?
Open-ended timing: The operation announced a start date but no end date. This deliberate ambiguity is meant to keep "Taiwan independence" forces in perpetual fear, forcing them to face the consequences of their reckless actions. The PLA seems to be telling the Taiwan authorities: "Face the consequences. Don't say you weren't warned."
Drills-to-combat readiness: The PLA has long stated that its exercises include "transition from drills to combat" scenarios. This operation likely embodies that principle. Drills can shift to combat at any moment. If the DPP authorities persist in crying wolf, their arrogance will only hasten their demise.
Furthermore, this exercise serves as a warning to external forces that insist on playing the Taiwan card. Without misguided signals from external actors, Lai would not dare to act so provocatively; without Lai's attempts to drag external forces into the fray, interference would not persist so stubbornly.
As the Chinese people say: "Friends receive warm hospitality; jackals face hunting rifles." The Chinese people fear no ghosts, succumb to no coercion and will crush all schemes to use Taiwan to contain, drain or confront China.
The DPP authorities and Lai Ching-te should reflect on the words of the ancient Chinese philosopher Han Fei, a noted thinker and representative of the Legalist School in the Warring States Period (475 B.C.-221 B.C.): "A state that disrespects and insults its powerful neighbor, acts greedily and obstinately in diplomacy, is doomed to perish."
