US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has met with Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen in California. Wu Bin spoke to Ji Ye, the deputy dean of the Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies at Xiamen University. Established in 1980, it's the oldest public academic institute dedicated to Taiwan studies in the world.

JI YE Deputy Dean, Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies, Xiamen University "We know that the U.S. side has a legal commitment to the Chinese side on the Taiwan question. After lengthy negotiations prior to China and the U.S. establishing diplomatic relations, the U.S. had to make a commitment to adhere to the one-China principle and not to have official contact with Taiwan's authorities on the Taiwan question. But after this meeting, from the information disclosed by the media, McCarthy clearly said that he wanted to continue arms sales to Taiwan, and further promote economic and trade relations between the U.S. and Taiwan. I think such a signal shows the U.S. side has departed from its commitment to the one-China principle. We can precisely see that they are trying to enhance a substantial relationship between the United States and Taiwan. So, we say that this is a new move in Tsai's search for U.S. support for 'Taiwan independence', which is worthy of our vigilance."

WU BIN CGTN Reporter "Before the meeting, China's Foreign Ministry repeatedly warned of any form of meetings between Tsai and US officials. But White House spokesperson John Kirby said that it's a common occurrence. He also said that Tsai has done this 6 times before and there's nothing unusual about this. What do you think about these remarks? Is it really nothing unusual?"

JI YE Deputy Dean, Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies, Xiamen University "I think the U.S. argument may be rather pale and feeble. According to the basic principles of international law, no country can violate its commitments under international law on the basis of domestic law. Since the U.S. side has made a commitment to China on the Taiwan question and the one-China issue according to the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, all U.S. government departments and agencies, including the legislature, should adhere to the one-China principle, and I think this is something the U.S. side should further explain to China."

WU BIN CGTN Reporter "On the Wednesday before the meeting, China announced a three-day patrol operation in central and northern parts of the Taiwan Strait. What does this mean?"

JI YE Deputy Dean, Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies of Xiamen University "Taiwan is a sacred and an inalienable part of Chinese territory. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and China's relevant maritime laws and regulations, the waters of the Taiwan Strait, extending from both shores toward the middle of the Strait, are divided into several zones including internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, and the Exclusive Economic Zone. So, it is within the scope of China's sovereignty and sovereign rights to conduct regular and routine patrol operation. I think this is a normal step for the Chinese government to exercise its rights."
